Me standing next to the trees we planted next to the driveway - June 5 2026

As my Facebook post to promote this particular blog will no doubt state, I find it interesting that I said last week’s blog was going to so boring that even I couldn’t endorse the idea of people reading it. So what happens? I had pretty much a record-tying number of legitimate visits to last week’s blog post.

This week was actually a fairly decent week. The biggest news is that my nephew has been accepted at Carleton University, where he will be studying Electrical Engineering. As my friend Kelly says, “But he’s 10!” And yes, it certainly seems like just yesterday I was in a hospital in Oshawa seeing him for the first time. Now he’s about to graduate from high school and head off to university.

I can’t believe it’s really happening but I am one proud Uncle Johnny!

On the home front, I started on my big room change last Saturday. I got the furniture moved and started in my spring cleaning purge, although I may do more this coming weekend. Meanwhile, my Mom and I didn’t spend all our time stuck around the house. We didn’t make any major treks (save one – which I will speak to in a minute) but kept it to a trip into a couple of visits to Ingersoll for groceries and one to London.

It was the trip to London where I stopped off at the headquarters of Shelf Life Magazine to see Paul, the editor and publisher. I dropped some issues off at the Thamesford Library (they are always very happy to receive them) and later, got to work on updating the Shelf Life website and had it completed by Thursday.

While I am still checking the job boards twice a day and applying to any job in the area (seven just this week), I feel like I’ve developed a semi-retired lifestyle. I’m proud to say that, while she takes the lead, I’ve been supporting my Mom in her landscaping projects this past week.

In addition to mowing the lawn (which I did this past week), I also helped her plant four trees along the driveway on Wednesday. I will say that maybe planting all four at once under a fairly hot sun was not the best idea. By the fourth one, I thought I was going to pass out. New rule: We take breaks to rehydrate and get some shade in between each planting. That’s why I tend to mow the lawn in chunks, rather than get completely wiped out and lose my energy to do anything else over the course of the day.

As busy as I was able to be on Tuesday, I lost most of the afternoon thanks to a headache (although as usual I was feeling fine by 8 o’clock when the day was all but over). If I ever wanted a reminder that I am not as young as I used to be, this past week surely reminded me of it.

Okay, I know that I posted this link on my Facebook the other day and since it’s NASCAR, it was probably annoying to most the first time. Still, I can’t help it. I love trailers, I love NASCAR and I love CCR. Mix ’em all together and what do you get? A trailer that I bet I’ve watched about three dozen times. (Oh, you think I’m lying but I’m not. I will admit that most of what I’ve watched is that moment about 15 seconds in when Creedence Clearwater Revival’s Fortunate Son kicks in.)

“Don’t do it, Noah!”

If you haven’t already watched it, check it out on YouTube.

For those who don’t know the particulars, on the weekend of June 21, NASCAR is going to race on a street course set up on Naval Base Coronado in San Diego, California. To help promote it, NASCAR created a short movie called NASCAR vs. NAVY which was to have premiered on Amazon Prime today. (It must be an American thing because I haven’t been able to find it.) To help promote that, they made the trailer.

Damn it! I wish I’d gone into movie making. Never mind the 120-minute films, I want to create trailers.

The jury is out as to what my weekend plans are. In a perfect world with good weather, my Mom and I might check out the town-wide yard sale in Ingersoll. If it’s pouring, however, we may take a pass and just get some things done around the house.

As always, I wish everyone who’s still reading this a great week to come. And as always, I welcome you to comment on anything you might have read either through a text or voice message on my Facebook page.
