
Tom Williams – From First World War Flying Ace to Canada’s Oldest Pilot

Tom Williams, born in Ingersoll on October 12, 1885, became a pilot in the First World War, tested parachutes in the Second World War and eventually logged 8,000 hours in the air, becoming the World’s Oldest Licensed Pilot, as per the Guinness Book of World Records. Read more.
The United States expedition to Korea – 1871
The U.S. involvement in the Korean War during the 1950s is well known. What is lesser known is the United States expedition to Korea that saw a conflict erupt in 1871. It all started after a merchant ship, General Sherman, went missing while visiting Korea five years earlier. When Frederick F. Low, ambassador to China, visited Korea with the U.S. Navy’s Asiatic Squadron, the squadron was attacked as they made their way up the Han River. Read more.
The Samoan Civil Wars
Beginning in 1886, rival factions among the Samoan Islands battled to determine who would ascend to the throne as the King of Samoa. At the same time, German, American and British forces looked to protect – and in some cases expand – their interests in the area.
